Older visitor reviews described limited options near the Bradenton Riverwalk after dark. Downtown Bradenton's evening offerings have since grown, and this August brings several nearby options.
The Riverwalk itself has not changed much. The sections below look at several businesses and events within a few blocks of it.
The Riverwalk Was Never the Problem
The Riverwalk itself does its job well. It runs 2.03 miles along the Manatee River between the Green and DeSoto bridges, and the splash pad at its center operates daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the skate park and fishing spots busy well past that. The park stays open around the clock. None of this is new information if you already live here. It is the baseline, not the story.
The story is what used to happen after the splash pad closed and the joggers went home. The nearby evening scene has continued to develop, and the following sections look at several of its businesses and events, beginning with a long-standing waterfront restaurant.
Pier 22's Waterfront Patio
Pier 22 has served the Manatee River since 1976, which makes this year its 50th on the water, a milestone the restaurant itself is marking on its site. The building it occupies dates to 1928 and was dedicated to 21 young men from Manatee County who died in World War One, so the setting has always carried some weight downtown.
What is new is the investment in the evening. Pier 22 recently renovated its waterfront patio and open-air bar, and the daily happy hour now runs 3 to 7 p.m. with discounted appetizers and drink specials that regulars have nicknamed after Snooty, the manatee who lived at the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature for 69 years. The renovation adds an updated outdoor setting to the restaurant's waterfront location.
Mattison's Turned Sunday Into a Ritual
A short walk away, Mattison's Riverwalk Grille has been open since 2016 and runs live music most nights, but the detail that says the most about where downtown Bradenton is headed is the Sunday Blues Brunch. It is not a special event. It is a standing weekly fixture, paired with $5 mimosas made from fresh orange and grapefruit juice sourced from Mixon Fruit Farms, a Bradenton grove that has supplied the restaurant for years.
A few blocks away, Oscura offers a different kind of event.
Oscura's 2019 Show Drew a Large Crowd
The clearest evidence that Bradenton wanted an evening out, long before it had the infrastructure for one, comes from Oscura, now at 816 Manatee Ave E in the Old Manatee neighborhood a few minutes from the Riverwalk. Oscura started in 2018 as a small coffee shop opened by two Manatee High School friends, Keith Nasewicz and Ben Greene. It closed during the pandemic in 2020. When it came back, it came back bigger, with a full stage, a green room for touring musicians, and a liquor bar layered onto the original coffee program.
SRQ Magazine reported on an Oscura show that took place before the venue's expansion. On December 22, 2019, Oscura booked a lineup that included Worst Party Ever, Photofire, Camp Trash and Cherish This in a room built to hold 100 to 150 people. More than 200 showed up. They sold out of beer within a couple of hours and had to brace a partition wall against the crowd. Greene described the partnership that made the bigger venue possible to SRQ Magazine: "It was like this perfect assembly of forces."
This month alone, Oscura's calendar includes Emo Night Brooklyn on August 22 and a comedy show with Chris Kattan and Donnie Stopa on August 28, both dated events on the venue's current schedule.
The Village of the Arts Keeps the Daytime Honest
Evenings are not the whole story. The Village of the Arts, centered around 12th Avenue West a few blocks south of the Riverwalk, holds its ArtWalk every first Friday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and the following Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Galleries like Baobab Tree Gallery and The Dancing Crane Gallery open their doors, and Birdrock Taco Shack does double duty as a food stop and a live music spot during the walk. The monthly ArtWalk is one of the recurring events on the calendar, alongside the August dates below.
What This August Actually Looks Like
Put the pieces together and downtown Bradenton this August reads differently than it would have five years ago. Friday, August 21 brings line dancing at Rocco's Italian Kitchen. Saturday, August 22 has both a Grateful Dead tribute night at 1611 9th Street West and Emo Night Brooklyn at Oscura, two entirely different crowds finding two entirely different rooms on the same night. The following Friday, August 28, Oscura hosts Chris Kattan and Donnie Stopa, and the weekend after that brings a comedy night at Craftails Speakeasy.
Taken together, the venues' regular offerings and the August dates give visitors several ways to plan time downtown.
