We all know Sarasota has beautiful beaches, glossy real estate, and more brunch spots than anyone actually needs (As a foodie, not complaining). But if you're looking for the real Sarasota, the one locals know and love, you have to dig a little deeper. Not far, just past the obvious.
Here are a few of my favorite low-key gems, perfect for those days when you want to feel like you live here, not like you’re just visiting.
The Hermitage Artist Retreat
This one flies under the radar in the best way. Located on the beach in Englewood, it hosts writers, painters, musicians, and dreamers of all kinds. Sometimes they open up for public performances or talks, and you’ll feel like you’ve discovered something incredibly special (because you have).
Lido Mangrove Tunnels
Rent a kayak, bring some snacks, and get lost (figuratively) in the winding mangrove tunnels off Lido Key. It’s peaceful, full of wildlife, and just far enough off the usual tourist path to feel like your little secret. Plus, it’s the kind of “adventure” that still ends with lunch and a cocktail.
Payne Park’s Circus Playground
Yes, it’s technically a kids park. But adults love it too, especially the ones with coffee in one hand and a sense of humor in the other. It's the perfect place for some family-fun.
The playground has circus-themed climbing structures, and the walking loop around the park is ideal for people-watching.
The Bazaar on Apricot & Lime
This is where you’ll find local artists, vintage treasures, handmade oddities, and the occasional person selling handmade dog bowties. It’s funky. It’s weird. It’s delightful. Perfect if you're into shopping without the pressure of spending a small fortune on a candle.
Sarasota Architectural Salvage
Looking for a six-foot antique mermaid to hang in your entryway? This is the place. Full of character and entirely unpredictable, it’s like walking through Sarasota’s attic. Even if you’re not shopping, go for the inspiration!
Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy
Yes, that’s really the name. And yes, it’s as quirky and lovable as it sounds. Open only part of the year, this little pink building on North Tamiami is full of color, charm, and sculptures that will make you smile. It’s a hard place to describe, which is exactly why you should go.
Gulf Gate Library’s Garden Courtyard
This one surprises a lot of people. Tucked in the middle of a regular-looking library is a peaceful, plant-filled courtyard perfect for an afternoon pause. It’s quiet, green, and oddly therapeutic. Bring a book or just your own thoughts and relax.
Which one is your favorite?
Anyone can fall in love with the ocean views, but what keeps people here are these little corners of charm that make life interesting.
If you’re shopping for a home, these are the kinds of things that won’t show up in a listing sheet, but they’ll absolutely show up in your everyday life.
